At home with the Bella Coola Indians : T.F. McIlwraith's field letters, 1922-4

Summary: McIlwraith's (1948), based on the Canadian anthropologist's stay at a British Columbia reserve, is regarded as one of the best ethnographies of a Northwest Coast First Nation. Barker (anthropology and sociology, U. of British Columbia) and Cole, a late professor of history (Simon Fraser U.), provide background on McIlwraith's life and career (1899-1964) and his papers, some published here for the first time, describing the native quest to maintain their culture and his rare participation (pictured) as a white man in potlatch and other ceremonies.
