Skeena River Estuary synthesis report : March 2021 / Editors: Sharpe, C.; Moore, J.W.; Carr-Harris, C.; and Butts, K.

Sharpe, Ciara, (editor.). Moore, Jonathan W., (editor.). Carr-Harris, Charmaine, (editor.). Butts, Kathrine, (editor.).

Summary:

"Although estuary habitats support many economic and culturally important fisheries, baseline knowledge of the Skeena River estuary remains limited. Much of the limited research that does exist is not publicly available and/or is difficult to find, making it challenging to establish a common scientific understanding of the ecology of the Skeena River estuary. The goal of this report is to address the aforementioned issue by distributing research withing the broader community and providing reference material to support future scientific studies (Appendix A). Additionally, this report synthesizes findings from five years of collaborative scientific research and monitoring efforts conducted by the Lax Kw'alaams Fisheries Program, the Skeena Fisheries Commission, and Simon Fraser University. We answer research questions relating to the estuarine environment (Section 2) and ecology of the Skeena River estuary, with a focus on juvenile salmon (Section 3 and 4). Additional topics include the estuarine fish community (Section 5), crab ecology (Section 5), and the estuarine food web (Section 4). This report summarizes these recent findings in the context of historical studies and identifies major knowledge gaps to be addressed in future research."-- executive summary, page xix.
