Over on the Dry Side.
The best western writer now in the saddle continues his big picture of manifest destiny--this time focusing on Owen Chantry and Doby Kernohan, a pair of Irishers intent on settling in what is apparently Colorado. Chantry, a well-educated Shane, finds that his brother Clive has been murdered and his spread taken over by friendly young Doby and his Pa. Some kill-crazy snakes are after a treasure Clive supposedly brought back from Mexico and the clue to where it's buried is in Tennyson's "Ulysses," Clive's favorite poem. While the lead flies this way and that, Chantry teaches Doby the meaning of that civilization a-borning onthe Plains. Baking-powder dialogue and flash-fire action.
