Ages 3^-5. A young child describes the events of her day, beginning with breakfast, when she pours the cereal and her mother pours the milk. Then it's opening all the envelopes when the mail arrives; going to the grocery store, where she helps pick out the cookies; visiting the park; and heading back home for story time, bath, and bed. The clear watercolor-and-ink illustrations and the simple text depict a calm and relatively uneventful day. They also reveal a trusting, loving relationship between a mother and daughter and the child's happiness as she experiences the joys of everyday things with someone she loves. Young children will feel completely at home with this tender story. ((Reviewed May 15, 2000)) Copyright 2000 Booklist Reviews

PreS-Gr 1-A little girl relates the day's activities beginning with waiting for her mother to awaken in the morning to falling asleep while she lies beside her at night. Together they do household chores, dress, shop for groceries, play in the park, read, etc. There is no male representation in the story. The child strongly emulates her mother and wants to be like her when she grows up. Realistic pictures support the text right down to the endpapers that match the yellow floral pattern of the protagonist's dress. Ohi's use of mottled tones lends a quiet contentedness to the story. As the day winds down, vignettes surrounded by large white spaces replace the earlier double-page spreads. The pacing is further slowed by briefer text until the child falls asleep. A gentle book for cozy bedtime sharing.-Susan Garland, Maynard Public Library, MA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
