Fire sail : a Xanth novel / Piers Anthony.
"Lydell, a shy, naive man of twenty-one, and world-weary grandmother Grania could not be more different. But when their paths cross on the way to beseech the Good Magician to add some excitement to their extraordinarily dull lives, the one thing they have in common is about to get them more than they bargained for . . . Lydell and Grania's exceptional integrity makes them valuable to the Good Magician. He promises to fulfill their hearts' desires on the condition they pilot a fireboat to its new proprietors, whoever--and wherever--they may be. Along with an obnoxious bird and a robot dogfish as shipmates, they unfurl their sail of flame and cruise through the skies of Xanth, guided by cryptic clues. Picking up a crew of future children along the way, Lydell and Grania must plan a royal wedding, detonate an F-Bomb, evade illusion dragons, rescue Jack and Jill, find a princess for a werewolf prince, and face their greatest fears--all while remaining true to their compulsively honest selves."--Provided by publisher.

Anthony's forty-second Xanth novel maintains a non-stop, dizzying pace of puns, puzzles, and probable cause-and-effect twists. The Good Magician has recruited two compulsively honest residents for a special mission. The embarrassingly shy youngster Dell and the elderly grandmother Nia have been promised their heart's desire if they will pilot a flying skiff to its new proprietors. The catch is that no one knows who or where the proper owners are, and the chosen adventurers wonder how they can accomplish their mission without knowing where they are going. Luckily there are a few clues that may helpâif the hapless sailors can fathom them. The journey will take Dell and Nia across the realm and occasionally beyond, crossing paths with delightful characters and curious plotlines from previous books in the series. But the real question throughout is, how many lady loves will Dell fall for and lose before finally finding The One? Anthony takes a frivolous fantasy of staying true to oneself and turns it into a lesson of tolerance, acceptance, and finding answers in unexpected places. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
