The idea of spending the summer cut off from the world anguished Franck but delighted Lise, so Franck had accepted, a little reluctantly and much for love, to rent in the Lot this house missing all the cards and without any network. The announcement spoke of a cottage lost in the hills, calm and peace. But not the bloody past of this house that nobody lived and who had sheltered a German tamer and his wild beasts during the First World War. And not this dog without collar, dog or wolf, who had imposed the couple on the first night and seemed to look for a master. On arriving that summer, Franck still believed that nature, which had been tamed as well as a pet, had nothing wild about it; he thought that the wars of the past, when men were killing each other, had given way to more insidious, less lethal wars. That was when we arrived. Serge Joncour tells the story, a century away, of a village in the Lot, and it is a past inhabited by animals and wiped out by the war he digs, as if to better illuminate our contemporary world.
