The absinthe earl Cover Image Book Book

The absinthe earl / Sharon Lynn Fisher.

Summary:

"Miss Ada Quicksilver, a student of London's Lovelace Academy for Promising Young Women, is spending her holiday in Ireland to pursue her anthropological study of fairies. She visits Dublin's absinthe bars to investigate a supposed association between the bittersweet spirit and fairy sightings. One night a handsome Irishman approaches her, introducing himself as Edward Donoghue. Edward takes absinthe to relieve his sleepwalking, and she is eager to hear whether he has experience with fairies. Instead, she discovers that he's the earl of Meath, and that he will soon visit a mysterious ruin at Newgrange on the orders of his cousin, the beautiful, half-mad Queen Isolde. On learning about Ada's area of study, he invites her to accompany him. Ada is torn between a sensible fear of becoming entangled with the clearly troubled gentleman and her compelling desire to ease his suffering. Finally she accepts his invitation, and they arrive in time for the winter solstice. That night, the secret of Edward's affliction is revealed: he is, in fact, a lord in two worlds and can no longer suppress his shadow self. Little does either of them realize that their blossoming friendship and slowly kindling passion will lead to discoveries that wrench open a door sealed for centuries, throwing them into a war that will change Ireland forever."--Amazon.com.

In the first book of Fisher's fantasy historical romance trilogy, the Faery Rehistory, spells are woven to draw readers into a retelling of ancient Irish myths featuring the supernatural Tuatha De Danaan, legendary Fenian warrior Diarmuid, and his unwitting modern-day inheritors. Ada Quicksilver is just an English scholar looking into the faery legends behind absinthe, the wicked green draught popular in Dublin in 1882. She happens to meet the earl of Meath, Edward Donoghue, not knowing that their souls had met and notoriously fallen in love hundreds of years previously. The earl invites Miss Q on a folk quest with him to the excavation of a fairy mound that leads them both to question their knowledge of the legends told to them in their youth. It also leads them to a council with the mad Queen Isolde and a battle for Ireland herself. Anyone who loves a good supernatural story, along with a hefty dose of Irish legend and romance, will adore this new series. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.

Fairies, absinthe, and ancient secrets provide an adventurous backdrop for romance in this historical-fantasy romance. In 1882, there are rumors in Ireland of fairies returning to make their claim on the country's lands. After years of banishment, they've found a way to bridge the worlds between human and fairy, and the key might lie in absinthe. Englishwoman Ada Quicksilver is in Ireland to study this connection of absinthe and fairies. At a pub that specializes in the bright green drink, Ada encounters Edward Donoghue, Earl of Meath, a most peculiar man whose sleepwalking is only helped by consumption of absinthe. He takes an immediate interest in Ada's research, offering to escort her to a famed fairy portal. As Edward joins Ada in her investigations, their connection grows deeper; their attraction is more than what it seems. The environment is lush and imaginative, with everyone appearing to hide their own seductive, dark secrets. It's a world that comes alive with mysterious, foggy moors, dangerous peat bogs, and gorgeous green hills. Ada is an admirably independent heroine, taking her r esearch quite seriously despite the handsome distraction of Edward. Though Edward plays a bigger role in the history of fairies and humans, he's also the more confusing of the two main characters, with a backstory that is, at times, difficult to follow. Dedicated romance readers might feel slightly robbed given the slow burn between the hero and heroine and the greater attention paid to establishing historic Ireland and its relationship to the fairy world. However, the Irish mythology and folklore are where Fisher's (Before She Wakes, 2016, etc.) writing shines. Despite its flaws, this is an ambitious series opener that mostly delivers. Imaginative, original, and worth a try. Copyright Kirkus 2019 Kirkus/BPI Communications. All rights reserved.

Fisher opens her Faery Rehistory series, set in an alternate historical Ireland where British imperialism is replaced by the menace of fairy invasion, with this complex, creative adventure. Miss Ada Quicksilver, a student at London's Lovelace Academy for Promising Young Women, is investigating the disappearance of fairies from Ireland. She's heard rumors that absinthe may facilitate sightings of the parallel world where they now dwell. Her research brings her into discussion with a handsome, enigmatic Irish nobleman who offers to bring her to a recently opened fairy fort. Edward Donoghue, Earl of Meath, is plagued by visions and sleepwalking that are tamed only by absinthe. As he and Ada pursue their investigations, they learn that Edward is a conduit between mortals and fairies, and that their growing bond holds the power to open the barrier between worlds—leading to a final confrontation between the fairies and their ancient enemies. Although the quick shifts between Ada and Edward's perspectives are distracting and disruptive, persevering readers will still enjoy Fisher's inventive premise and the heady romance between two independent and well-matched protagonists. Fans of Gail Carriger and Leanna Renee Hieber will savor this promising series opener. Agent: Robin Rue, Writers House. (Oct.)
