Police Inspector Richard Jury, along with his entourage of friends and associates, sets out to discover the connection between three killings that have taken place across three counties in contemporary England. That connection, he believes, will lead to the identity of the killer. Narrator Steve West is perfectly matched to this story. His delivery has confidence and authority, qualities that fit the lead character. West also brings the large cast of characters alive and authentically reflects the various accents and intonations of the English class system. This 25th entry in the Jury series has many characters and backstories. Because of this, it could be a confusing listen for someone entering the series at this point. That said, West provides a strong narration. K.J.P. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine - Booklist Reviews : Booklist Reviews 2020 April #2
When a woman's body is found on the beach, Commander Brian Macalvie calls on Superintendent Richard Jury for help. Jury, who had just met former Scotland Yard detective Tom Brownell at the Old Success pub, invites Brownell into the case. Together they search for the thread connecting the three seemingly unrelated murders. British reader West varies the three accents, easily distinguishing among the detectives. Jury sounds thoughtful and in control; Macalvie has a gruffer, unpolished quality; Brownell is older but retains a sharp, analytical mind. West has fun with the overly dramatic Melrose Plant and does a good job voicing both children and female characters. His accent is authentic but still easy for American audiences to understand. The plot is complex with a lot of backstory and details requiring careful listening, but Grimes is a master, and she can pull it all together nicely, while West delivers another solid performance.
