The subject of ecology is deep and diverse and in this book, as DK presents the many facets of the topic in a readable and relatable manner. Each chapter (e.g., "Evolution," "Ecosystems," "The Human Factor") begins with an overview including a timeline highlighting the people and studies that advanced the thinking in each area. The sections within each chapter address various subtopics. For example, sections in "The Human Factor" include "Pollution," "Endangered Habitats," and "The Legacy of Pesticides." Each section identifies a key figure in the field within a sidebar that summarizes notable people and/or findings before and after the key figure's contributions. For instance, the key figure in "The Legacy of Pesticides" is Rachel Carson. Over a hundred years before her influential book Silent Spring, Thoreau's book Walden spoke of living in harmony with nature. Less than a decade after the publication of Carson's book, the Environmental Protection Agency was established. Each section also includes a "See Also" bar to point the reader to other parts of the book that connect to the topic, recognizing the interrelation of the many issues within ecology. The book's subtitle is very appropriate. The format is appealing, with the main text broken up by sidebars, graphics, pertinent quotes, and photographs. Students need not read all 352 pages if just researching biodiversity, as the index will direct the reader to the relevant pages. A glossary and a directory of additional significant people in the ecology movement are also included at the end of the book. In the past, DK has consistently provided reliable resource material on a variety of subjectsâthey have done so again.
