Julian Rhind-Tutt is a narrator of one's dreams. He reads clearly in a melodious voice with spot-on pacing. He offers believable and interesting characterizations of everyone from Belgian Hercule Poirot to a working-class London tea-shop lady. And when the text offers context, such as "he laughed"--well, he has the character laugh. They also cough on cue. What is the audiobook about? It's the third of Sophie Hannah's mystery homages to Agatha Christie's detective. As long as you accept that Hannah's Poirot is livelier and less finicky than the original, and that the books, although well written, aren't as tightly plotted as the originals, you'll enjoy the result. This one involves an old man who drowned in his bath. Or was he shoved under? A.C.S. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine

Rhind-Tutt's plummy tones transport listeners to the golden age of mysteries, when Agatha Christie was queen and Hercule Poirot the world's best-known detective. In this third of Hannah's clever continuation of Poirot's cases, four people, seemingly unknown to each other, receive letters, purportedly from the master detective, accusing them of murder. The intuitive Poirot, aided by Scotland Yard Inspector Catchpool, must employ his "little gray cells" to solve the murder. Reanimating a classic detective can be tricky, especially on audio, where the narrator must vocally convey a beloved character. Rhind-Tutt's narration splendidly captures Poirot, and the secondary characters are delivered with panache. He creates distinctive voices that readily evoke their speakers, from the whispery tones of an ancient manservant to the various voices—imperious, angry, naive, and foolish—of the suspects. Hannah and Rhind-Tutt have fashioned an excellent retro mystery with a modern and slightly noirish sensibility. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
