Summary:
Fern and her mother have lived as servants in Wyndemere House, the old gothic mansion of the Davenport family, ever since she could remember. Although Fern may have been a servant, prior to Dr. Davenport's second wife, she had developed a close friendship with his son, Ryder, and was even allowed free range of the estate. When the new Mrs. Davenport moves into the mansion, Fern and her mother aren't even allowed to use the front door. Despite all the new wife's harsh discipline and cruelty, she's still unable to break the mysterious bond between Ryder and Fern.
