Narrator Anna Acton beautifully captures the edginess and yearning that make Louisa Clark, the protagonist of this novel and Moyes's previous runaway bestseller, ME BEFORE YOU, such an affecting character. Acton also so ably embodies the disaffected teenager who enters Louisa's life that you may want to give her a time-out. But keep listening--you'll be amply rewarded. In Moyes's previous book, Louisa took a job caring for an amazing man who was left quadriplegic after an accident. Now, when he chooses to end his life, Louisa must navigate an unwelcome yet surprising world. In a captivating, believable reading highlighted by real-world pacing and characterizations, Acton lifts Moyes's well-crafted novel into edge-of-your-seat listening that will keep listeners awake well past their bedtime. Susan Lyons takes on the dynamic voice of plucky Louisa Clarke, whose life changes dramatically when she's hired as an assistant by the rich and cultured Will Trainer. Lyons's pacing and variations in pitch bring out Will's angst and Louisa's growing enthusiasm for enriching her life with new experiences. The choice to have several other narrators deliver the monologues of Will's mother, father, personable Aussie caretaker, and Louisa's outspoken sister seems unnecessary. Though the secondary narrators reinforce Lyons's portrayal of the characters in the main narrative, the short parts they read are jarring. Both the switches in narrators and the discernible edits in the audio are distracting elements in an otherwise strong performance by Lyons. M.F. (c) AudioFile 2013, Portland, Maine

Despite her lack of nursing experience, former waitress Louisa Clark lands a job as daytime caretaker for recently paralyzed quadriplegic businessman Will Traynor. Will's wealthy family prays that this cheerful young woman can dispel Will's depression and determination to end his own life. Louisa is horrified when she learns that euthanasia has been scheduled and sets out to enrich Will's life enough to restore his will to live. Moyes (The Girl You Left Behind) writes with such intimacy that the listener almost feels like an eavesdropper. Susan Lyons's reading brings Louisa to life, with an array of other voices that relay the thoughts of key characters in Will's life.
