Gr 5-8-Dramatic, high-quality, full-color photographs are featured throughout these series entries. The text blocks are superimposed on the pictures. They are clear and concise, lucidly explaining elementary information, but there is little attempt to relate the material being discussed to the visual backdrops. Scientific terms are italicized and defined, making them readily understandable. Brian Knapp's What Do We Know About the Grasslands? (Bedrick, 1992), Alan Collinson's Grasslands (Dillon, 1992), and Lynn Stone's Mountains (Rourke, 1989) cover the same ground as Rotter's titles, but emphasize ecology and the impact people have had on it. Franklyn Branley's Hurricane Watch (Crowell, 1985) has more detail and is illustrated with cartoons; Jonathan Kahl's Storm Warning (Lerner, 1993) has good photographs, but its smaller size does not have the same visual effect. In presenting the basics or as pictorial supplements to more in-depth treatments, these volumes may find a place in library collections.-Meryl Silverstein, formerly at Meyer Levin Junior High School, Brooklyn, NY Copyright 1994 Cahners Business Information.
