A criminal injustice a true crime, a false confession, and the fight to free Marty Tankleff

Firstman, Richard. (Author). Salpeter, Jay. (Added Author).

Summary: 17-year-old Marty Tankleff awoke one morning in 1988 to find his parents brutally murdered in their Long Island home. He told the police that his father's business partner had threatened them and had been there the evening before, but the police focused exclusively on Marty and got a conviction--even though the business partner then faked his own death and fled to California. After ten years of denied appeals, Marty hired a private investigator Jay Salpeter, who uncovered police ineptitude and corruption going well beyond a simple miscarriage of justice. Marty was freed and Salpeter went on to devote his career to overturning wrongful convictions.
