An earnest, overly ambitious call to action laid over an omnium-gatherum of environmental issues affecting the British Columbian rain forest in particular and all of us in general.

Vernon shoehorns her narrative in among inspirational slogans, testimonials from rain-forest residents and environmental workers, case studies in local activism and small color photos of wildlife (particularly bears) and huge trees. She points in turn to depleted salmon runs, the forced relocation of native groups, clearcut logging, the hazards of sending huge oil tankers down nearby shipping lanes and the relentless overhunting of abalone, whales and sea otters. Looking further afield, she also calls attention to global warming, the toxic effects of mining Alberta's oil sands and the danger of our "addiction" to oil, before closing with reports of successful nonviolent protests and a passionate plea to cut back, re-use and become involved in collective action. Though too general to serve as a nuts-and-bolts guide for young activists—and hard to read, thanks to the overcrowded page design—this adds another voice to the chorus warning that global disaster is on the way and sitting it out isn't the smart option.

A litany of valid concerns, though too broad and generalized to be a mind changer. (glossary, resources, index) (Nonfiction. 10-12)

Did you know that in the Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia there are salmon in the trees? Animals take the salmon into the forest to eat, and what is left decomposes and fertilizes the soil. In Nowhere Else on Earth, Vernon explores this unique, beautiful, and wondrous section of the world. While the author comes down firmly on the side of conservation, she presents a balanced and sensitive view of what has driven, and what still drives, people to not conserve. There are inspirational quotes liberally sprinkled throughout the text, and many examples of what ordinary citizens, especially children, have done to conserve not only this rainforest and the heritage of First Nations people but also neighborhoods elsewhere. Not sure where to start? There are many sidebars with ideas and questions that will motivate anyone to explore their own heritage and world. If you still need help, the final chapter pulls together what the energized reader can do to effect change The short chapters, lavishly illustrated with photographs, are divided into easy-to-read segments. This is a very readable and accessible book that will appeal to all ages. There is a glossary, but the word choices seem curious: if you can read the term "ecosystem-based management" do you need the word "prey" explained? While Vernon focuses on the Great Bear Rainforest, this is an inspiring book that anyone interested in conserving our planet should read. Vernon's motivating vision for the future reinforces just how connected we all are—not just to this rainforest but to everywhere on Earth.—Sharon MartinWithers, Jennie and Phyllis Hendrickson. Hey, Back Off! Tips for Stopping Teen Harassment. New Horizon, 2011. 224p. $14.95 Oversize pb. ISBN 978-0882823652. Further Reading. Index. 5Q 3P J S A/YSometimes it is hard to put your finger on what exactly defines a bully. That is because the meaning has evolved over time. No longer can parents expect the neighborhood bully to be a hulking kid who snatches a quaking, eyeglass-wearing child's lunch money. It could very well be the popular girl who gets all of her equally cool friends to ostracize the new kid at school This title is an excellent read for teens and their parents. It will get them started on a discussion of bullying and identifying the abusive behaviors associated with it. The book speaks to issues that teens commonly face and how to work through them. Hey Back Off! also offers exercises for parents and teens as they work their way through the material. Numerous types of bullying are exposed, including sexual harassment and hazing, and get the reader thinking about the evolution of bullying and how the landscape has changed over time. Part of that landscape includes cyberbullying, which has become increasingly commonplace due to the pervasive nature of the Internet. The authors also venture into explorations of parenting styles and how they may contribute to the behaviors, as well as how to handle bullying as a parent. This title needs to be wherever teens and their families are serviced. It is an essential purchase for public and school libraries alike.—Robbie Flowers 4Q 4P M J S Copyright 2011 Voya Reviews.
