Summary:
In 1877, as the Tsar's Royal Cavalry descends on the defenseless Ottoman outpost on Constanta, Eleanora is born. Her father, a carpet merchant, recognizes very early that his daughter is a prodigy. In 1886, when he sets off by boat for Stamboul on business, the child stows away in a carpet bale. At the house of her father's business partner, Eleanora's horizons expand. But people in the beleagured city are not always who or what they seem.
