Summary:
Rachel, a slave girl from South Carolina, continues to struggle in her new home in Shelburne, Nova Scotia. Having spent months in a horrible pit house, Rachel's stepfather works hard for a real home. Rachel's determination to learn to read and write also begin to bear fruit. But with de-listed white soldiers unable to find work, resentment for their black neighbours arises and presents new obstacles for Rachel and her family.
